P-A-R-T-Y? Because We’ve Got To!

Since 4th of July is right around the corner, I’m starting to plan and organize a party at my new place! Talk about a semi-stressful time: a big move, a new place and now a party?   Some might call me crazy, but I’m not worried about that because I have the easiest steps to organize a party and even tips on how to keep the party thriving.  P-A-R-T-Y? Because We’ve Got To! I happened upon eHow Home’s website and found simple tips on how to organize parties in general, and when I did so, I found related articles on themed parties, where to find supplies, decorations and ideas. Check it out!   I agree with their process and think that it’s easiest to think of your party as a movie. There’s going to be the introductions, the climax and highlights in the middle, and closing time for the guests to bid farewell. So, work through...

So, the pictures have started to come in. We will be posting pictures of the Messy Closet entries on our blog, as well as on our Facebook page. We are taking submissions until June 30th, so visit the Official Rules page to learn how you can win! Without further delay, here they are:   Messy Closet #1: This closet is the closet that tucks around under our stairs.  I have an assortment of items ranging from Christmas (& other holidays like Easter) decor, electronics, stationary items (scrapbooking stuff & wrapping paper/bags), vacuums, steam cleaner, painting  upplies, & shoes, etc…  I tried to have it somewhat...

Organizing Shirts ‘Til It Hurts

As I was moving and organizing my closets, I stumbled upon shirts, in particular, that I a.) no longer needed, b.) no longer wanted, or c.) became new-found favorites.   And though I know I’ve touched on closets before, I think it is important to touch on shirts as their category. Organizing Shirts ‘Til It Hurts Let’s talk about organization first: I like to organize all of my shirts first and foremost by purpose. I have my business shirts, business casual shirts, clubbing tops (yeah, that’s right. I said it), everyday shirts and nicer blouses.   Once I bunch all of them together, I then sort by how often I wear them. The most frequently worn items, I happen to put in the front so in case I accidentally sleep through an alarm and need to bolt to work in the speed of light, I have my easily accessible go-to items.   Then, I like to...

The New Kind of M and M: Moxie + Moving!

Earlier today I was sitting on the Jersey shore looking out at the waves crashing in with the soothing sound, summer breeze and rays slowing kissing my skin. I thought to myself, “what an AMAZING break this is from organizing and moving…” The New Kind of M&M: Moxie + Moving! As I said last week, moving is a process. I not only was helping my friend move, but was moving myself. It seems like now is the “hot” time of the year to move and transition into a new home.  So, if you find yourself trying to organize your move a little more efficiently, here’s a combination of tips I’ve created and some I’ve found throughout the years.   Tips to Organize Your Move: Set a time frame of how long you want your moving process to be and a deadline of when you want your move to be complete. Decide whether you will need a...

Expiration Dates Have Expiration Dates: USE THEM!

First and foremost, let me just say that moving is a lot of work! I’m currently in the process of helping one of my friends move from her old place as I too move into a new place. And trust me, it is a process.   But before I talk about moving in general, I just want to hone in on an important part of the organizing process that can be repulsive.   Spoiled Food. That’s right. Expired milk, rotting eggs, browning bananas, molding bread- the whole nine yards. Expiration Dates Have Expiration Dates: USE THEM! I’m not saying I am perfect by any means, for I have the pantry and refrigerator full of some items that may never be used. But, at the same time, I don’t take it to the extreme of buying 13 Taco Bell Taco Sauce bottles merely because there is a sale, like my friend.   I was seriously shocked to look...

Pantry Organizing!!!

Last week we got to work with a family that had the most ethnically diverse pantry we have ever seen. When a client knows what fish sauce is, we are impressed. When they have three different types, we are blown away! Needless to say, this pantry was an awesome project! The biggest challenge for the client was that this pantry is in her laundry room. The kitchen was remodeled by the previous owners, and while it looks amazing, it has very little room for food storage. Therefore, most of the food has to be kept in the cabinets in the laundry room. There were four cabinets that had food in them. Here they are:   The first step? Tossing out all the expired food. In total, there were 11 kitchen-size garbage bags FULL of food that were expired. There could be more, but the crazy Asian food didn’t have expiration dates (or at least ones we...

From Madness to Magic- Organize Kid’s School Stuff

As I mentioned the other day, it is SUPER important to organize our your kid’s schedules to instill the importance of prioritizing and time management. I mentioned creating routines for you kids to get in the habit of doing, like: coming home from school; dropping off the backpack; bringing important papers for you to sign; doing homework; eating dinner; taking a bath; reading a story and going to bed.   But before you race ahead, put on the brakes! As important as it is to follow the simple and generic tips that were posted on the learning tab, there is something in that sequence that can contribute to chaos that needs to be addressed pronto!   Nope, it’s not reading a story, or taking a bath, or eating dinner. Re-evaluate that sequence and let me know what stands out like fireworks on the 4th of July.   Answer: Dropping off the backpack, bringing important papers for...

Feeling Like A Yo-Yo? It’s Time to Organize Kid’s Schedules

Over the weekend, we touched on organizing kid’s closets and tasks to make it an engaging and learning experience for the kids. And as I was writing, I thought back to all of the items I still have from my recitals a hundred years ago, and got to thinking of how busy I was as a child. Feeling Like A Yo-Yo? It’s Time to Organize Kid’s Schedules Although that busyness has only continued to grow into a more structured controlled chaos, I thought back to all of the running around my parents did taking me from piano lessons, to the dance studio, to gymnastics, to singing, to cheer, to club activities and the list goes on and on.   Just as we all do, children have hectic schedules and sometime their to-do list seems to be written on a scroll of paper that appears to unravel for miles and miles and miles. I want to help...

Lions, Tigers and Closets? Oh My!

Closets, closets, closets! Now that I went through my closet for my ultimate shopping spree last night, I thought it might be a good idea to address some tips on how to organize kid’s closets. Lions, Tigers and Closets? Oh My! It’s amazing how many items you will find in a kid’s closet. It’s as if in a blink of an eye, 1 turns into 1 million clutter, untouched items that either become stackable space-holders, germ-infested toys or clothes they outgrew years and years ago. I can’t stress the importance of maximizing your space enough. Your closet is something you might always try to hide or not want to address. But, it’s important to keep your closet organized as much as you do your thoughts. Plus, it will allow you to get rid of the old and bring in the new AND to give to those less fortunate! No more negative connotations associated with closets. In...
