  It’s always an upset when someone’s business closes. It’s an upset to the owner, who was in all likelihood, hoping to make an impact on the world for the better with his corporation. It’s a disappointment to the employees who were counting on the income. It’s also definitely bad news to the client, who was expecting to receive goods and/or services rendered, but is left high and dry. Such is the case on Friday, July 31, 2015 when HOMEJOY, an internet based company, claiming to match quality home cleaning (and other) professionals with clients, will close it’s doors. WHAT HAPPENED? HomeJoy is currently facing four lawsuits by workers regarding the misclassification of employees, which played a large part in the shut down. What does this mean? When an employee is hired, the employer must pay social security, payroll taxes, unemployment etc. If the worker is paid as an Independent Contractor, however, his employer is not...

Event Hosting with Moxie Girl

  If you’ve ever longed to have a birds-eye-view of a chef at work, creating culinary masterpieces designed to entertain the eye and  delight the palette, you would have loved to have been in my Moxie Girl shoes last Saturday night! It was my privilege to assist Alison, an aspiring chef, with her first ‘Underground Experience’, an elegant 6 course Early Summer Redefined Picnic Dinner for 24. My first duties consisted of a quick pre-event once-over of the party-sized kitchen area and dining areas, including dusting, vacuuming and lighting a myriad of candles. Chef Alison handled the first early glitch in the evening with calm grace– a 45 minute power outage occurring shortly before guests were scheduled to arrive. Chef handed me the battery-powered vacuum as the barbeque outside was lit for roasting the small red potato hors d’oeuvres, hardly missing a beat in the tight presentation schedule.
