P-A-R-T-y? Because We’ve Got To!

Need help organizing a party? Visit the websites I posted and let me help you!

Since 4th of July is right around the corner, I’m starting to plan and organize a party at my new place! Talk about a semi-stressful time: a big move, a new place and now a party?

Some might call me crazy, but I’m not worried about that because I have the easiest steps to organize a party and even tips on how to keep the party thriving.

I happened upon eHow Home’s website and found simple tips on how to organize parties in general, and when I did so, I found related articles on themed parties, where to find supplies, decorations and ideas. Check it out!

I agree with their process and think that it’s easiest to think of your party as a movie. There’s going to be the introductions, the climax and highlights in the middle, and closing time for the guests to bid farewell. So, work through the party in your mind and determine how you want it to play out to properly ensure it will happen that way.

Plus, another tip: it is sometimes fun to get party favors even as adults! Think of what will be the most entertaining for them (which I’m going to chat about next post).

IN ADDITION!!! Moxie Girl Household Assistants provides this service to you. If you need help with organizing invitations, the party itself, catering, a hostess, and more, we have got you covered! And that is another reason why I’m not stressing about organizing my party. And I’m definitely not too proud to ask for help! :+) The more hands, the better!

In life, it’s all about connections and how you use them. Feel free to check out all of the information and tips I use to make sure the party is a bang! I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Next post to come: how to keep guests entertained in 114 degree weather… Trust me, it can be done!

Let me know if you find any other tips!

Which Messy Closet Will Win?

Filed under: How To,Stress Free Living — Tags: , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 11:17 pm

So, the pictures have started to come in. We will be posting pictures of the Messy Closet entries on our blog, as well as on our Facebook page. While the voting is going to be purely subjective (hey, at least we are honest!), pity comments from your friends and family wouldn’t hurt. We will continue to post more as they come in, but in the mean time, try and guess which one will win a closet organizing package from Moxie Girl!

We are taking submissions until June 30th, so visit the Official Rules page to learn how you can win! Without further delay, here they are:

Closet #1:

Messy Closet #1: This closet is the closet that tucks around under our stairs.  I have an assortment of items ranging from Christmas (& other holidays like Easter) decor, electronics, stationary items (scrapbooking stuff & wrapping paper/bags), vacuums, steam cleaner, painting  upplies, & shoes, etc…  I tried to have it somewhat organized but w/ a 2 yr old that won’t nap a lot of my projects (like this) have been unfortunately pushed to the back burner. It is hard to do detailed work w/ a little “helper”.  ;)

Closet #2

Messy Closet #2: You know those boxes your parents send you when they think you are grown up enough to take all your childhood stuff? This is where they ended up in our house. While it is nice that they are all contained to a small space, it would be even nicer to have the closet available for other stuff!

Closet #3

Messy Closet #3: I have no time to organize, put away, seperate, or even find time to have the light fixed so I can see my chaos-i have found time to prioritize for others just not me. Please pick me for some Moxie Magic:)

Messy Closet #4

Messy Closet #4: I share my closet with my daughter and husband and Christmas. It is a disaster!

Organizing Shirts ‘Til It Hurts

Want to make your shirts look like this? Follow my insight and it will be super simple!

As I was moving and organizing my closets, I stumbled upon shirts, in particular, that I a.) no longer needed, b.) no longer wanted, or c.) became new-found favorites.

And though I know I’ve touched on closets before, I think it is important to touch on shirts as their category.

Let’s talk about organization first: I like to organize all of my shirts first and foremost by purpose. I have my business shirts, business casual shirts, clubbing tops (yeah, that’s right. I said it), everyday shirts and nicer blouses.

Once I bunch all of them together, I then sort by how often I wear them. The most frequently worn items, I happen to put in the front so in case I accidentally sleep through an alarm and need to bolt to work in the speed of light, I have my easily accessible go-to items.

Then, I like to put them in color order, if possible. That way, when I open the closet, I can see all of the different tones and hues and really hone in on what type of look I’m going for that day.

In addition, I also within those categories and colored areas, like to organize them from shortest in length to longest. For example, I like to have my short, sheer blouse before my little-bit-lengthier clubbing blouse- notice the “little-bit”. :+)

And lastly, an interesting spin on organizing your shirts this way would be to put matching shorts, pants or skirts draped with your shirts. That way you have a ready-to-go ensemble.

For the shirts that need to be folded, that is a whole ‘nother story to come. Click here to see a sneak preview of my demonstration on Sonoran Living on quick and easy ways to fold!

The New Kind of M&M: Moxie + Moving!

Before your move looks like this, let us help you! Make moving stress-free and easy!

Earlier today I sitting on the Jersey shore looking out at the waves crashing in with the soothing sound, summer breeze and rays slowing kissing my skin. I thought to myself, “what an AMAZING break this is from organizing and moving…”

As I said last week, moving is a process. I not only was helping my friend move, but was moving myself.

It seems like now is the “hot” time of the year to move and transition into a new home.  So, if you find yourself trying to organize your move a little more efficiently, here’s a combination of tips I’ve created and some I’ve found throughout the years.

Tips to Organize Your Move:

  1. Set a time frame of how long you want your moving process to be and a deadline of when you want your move to be complete.
  2. Decide whether you will need a few cars to load things up or a moving van.
  3. Pack a separate suitcase full of clothes and items you use frequently to keep with you in between your old and new place.
  4. Clean everything and everywhere.
  5. Organize your items according to room and then subcategorize by types of items.
  6. Decide whether or not you want to move with boxes, bags or a combination of the two.
  7. Find a central area that you can place all of the bags and boxes into. By stacking boxes (labeled by sharpie on the outside) or having an area to haul bags (don’t necessarily have to be labeled), you will make the actual moving part very quick.
  8. Work in shifts or find a group to assist you- which is where we can step in! Please contact us if you need assistance organizing or executing your move. Click here for more information.

In addition, I happened to find 101 helpful tips for moving off of moversedge.com if you want to have a mapped-out play-by-play of your move.

For me though, I think the 8 tips I laid out are the most important to fully understand to effectively execute your organized moving process.

I know it can be a strenuous task, but not only do I want to help you, but I have faith in you. The sooner you get it done, the sooner you can reach your paradise- your new home- your new beginning. And that, in and of itself, will feel just as good as lying on the beach of the Jersey Shore.

Expiration Dates Have Expiration Dates: USE THEM!

Is your food looking like this?? Time to toss it out. Let's keep practical about organizing our fuel forces!

First and foremost, let me just say that moving is a lot of work! I’m currently in the process of helping one of my friends move from her old place as I too move into a new place. And trust me, it is a process.

But before I talk about moving in general, I just want to hone in on an important part of the organizing process that can be repulsive.

Spoiled Food. That’s right. Expired milk, rotting eggs, browning bananas, molding bread- the whole nine yards.

I’m not saying I am perfect by any means, for I have the pantry and refrigerator full of some items that may never be used. But, at the same time, I don’t take it to the extreme of buying 13 Taco Bell Taco Sauce bottles merely because there is a sale, like my friend.

I was seriously shocked to look at all of the good food she let go to waste! I wanted to scream, “Next time, pick me! I’m here. I would have eaten it!”

Needless to say, my heart broke a little bit as we were tossing out the Costco chocolate covered macademia nuts with caramel and my favorite kinds of cereal she so irresponsibly left open and had gone stale. Good thing she bought at least 5 other ones that she will probably never open. With all of the hoopla of moving, now might be my chance to swoop in and take a box!

But, back to the point. When you are moving and organizing your old stuff to make your new place a home, really take the time to look through your food and see if there are items way past the expiration date, or food that is still “good”. And if it looks like it’s something you are not going to eat, please find a charity to give it to, or comment on here to let us know if you have some tips to collect/place to take extra food.

I feel like the world is living in excess. Have you ever realized how much better functioning a home is when there is less clutter and less of everything? Every item should have a place and if it doesn’t fit your’s, don’t be so quick to make the trash can its place. Let’s learn from this moving and spoiled food experience and do something about it. Together.

Pantry Organizing!!!

Filed under: Home Organizing,How To — Tags: , , , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 2:07 am

Last week we got to work with a family that had the most ethnically diverse pantry we have ever seen. When a client knows what fish sauce is, we are impressed. When they have three different types, we are blown away! Needless to say, this pantry was an awesome project!

The biggest challenge for the client was that this pantry is in her laundry room. The kitchen was remodeled by the previous owners, and while it looks amazing, it has very little room for food storage. Therefore, most of the food has to be kept in the cabinets in the laundry room. There were four cabinets that had food in them. Here they are:

Cans, boxes, and a few random surprises

messy pantry

Ethnic foods, pantry staples, and more

Snacks, baking and cooking supplies, and more!

Snacks, snacks, and more snacks!

The first step? Tossing out all the expired food. In total, there were 11 kitchen-size garbage bags FULL of food that were expired. There could be more, but the crazy Asian food didn’t have expiration dates (or at least ones we could read!), so the client had to go off her memory.

The next step? Create a system for the cabinets. We kept the four cabinets furthest away from the kitty litter box as food storage. Instead of a little bit of everything in each one, they each got a theme:

Grown-up snacks and breakfast food
(and the Goldfish that wouldn’t fit with the kid snacks section)

The snack and breakfast cabinet

Keeping cooking staples, like pastas and beans in clear, labeled containers so the client can easily see what she is running low on when making her grocery list.

Cooking staples

Cooking staples, all neat and organized!

Keep packets of seasoning and small packages contained in small boxes.

All the Asian food is now all together in one spot

Vegetables on the top shelf, soups and proteins on the next shelf, sauces on the bottom two shelves.

Canned and boxed goods are categorized and grouped together

We worked on the kitchen and the other laundry room cabinets too. More of those “after” pictures to come soon!  :-)

From Madness to Magic- Organize Kid’s School Stuff

As I mentioned the other day, it is SUPER important to organize our your kid’s schedules to instill the importance of prioritizing and time management. I mentioned creating routines for you kids to get in the habit of doing, like: coming home from school; dropping off the backpack; bringing important papers for you to sign; doing homework; eating dinner; taking a bath; reading a story and going to bed.

But before you race ahead, put on the brakes! As important as it is to follow the simple and generic tips that were posted on the learning tab, there is something in that sequence that can contribute to chaos that needs to be addressed pronto!

Nope, it’s not reading a story, or taking a bath, or eating dinner. Re-evaluate that sequence and let me know what stands out like fireworks on the 4th of July.

Answer: Dropping off the backpack, bringing important papers for you to sign! Ding, ding, DING! I know some schools are trying to be very green, but I’m sure kids are still sent home with important papers and who knows what else is in that backpack of theirs. So, how in the world can we organize all of the stuff our kids bring home from school?

Learn how to organize all the items kids bring home from school and make it unique to your home!

You’ve got papers, folders, food, invitations, borrowed items from other students, crayons, markers, pens, pencils, homework, the need-to-be-signed papers, and are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

Don’t be. I’m just trying to get you riled up to let you know that there is no reason to panic. Merely bringing the topic of organizing everything your child brings home in this light is to raise awareness, which is important!

I found a lot of great ideas for organizing all of the stuff your child brings from school when visiting iVillage Garden Web. In a nutshell, parents posted unique ways of teaching independence for their kids and in various ways.

For example, jcs7, who was a previous teacher, posted that her kids come in the back door, hang up coats and take off shoes to proceed to empty their lunch boxes and put the ice packs in the freezer. From there she said the kids bring out their folders from their backpack and place art papers in their own arts and crafts “in-box” (a dish pan). She said the need-to-be signed papers go into their own file holder hanging on the wall- which gets emptied out and signed every night- and then the parents place those papers directly back in their backpacks. Lastly, she said that their family calendar (which I talked about last we met) is posted by those file folders to manage invitations and school district activities.

As far as calendars go, you can either receive the district calendar from the school or, as another writer posted, there’s a mom’s calendar made by More Time for Moms. To manage invitations, jcs7 hangs them chronologically above the calendar using a jumbo clothespin.

All of these ideas are unique and can be altered to you. I do think they are a perfect guideline to managing and organizing all of the stuff your kids bring home. I want to add your feedback to our manual!

Let me know if you have any other organizing tips or if you like how these are executed.

Feeling Like A Yo-Yo? It’s Time to Organize Kid’s Schedules

Feeling overwhelmed with your children's schedule and yours? Not to worry- follow our steps and it will keep you from becoming overwhelmed.

Over the weekend, we touched on organizing kid’s closets and tasks to make it an engaging and learning experience for the kids. And as I was writing, I thought back to all of the items I still have from my recitals a hundred years ago, and got to thinking of how busy I was as a child.

Although that business has only continued to grow into a more structured controlled chaos, I thought back to all of the running around my parents did taking me from piano lessons, to the dance studio, to gymnastics, to singing, to cheer, to club activities and the list goes on and on.

Just as we all do, children have hectic schedules and sometime their to-do list seems to be written on a scroll of paper that appears to unravel for miles and miles and miles. I want to help you organize your kid’s schedules so you can keep yours, and teach them at a young age how to manage their time.

Lions, Tigers and Closets? Oh My!

Want your kid's closet to look like this? Follow our simple steps and it can!

Closets, closets, closets! Now that I went through my closet for my ultimate shopping spree last night, I thought it might be a good idea to address some tips on how to organize kid’s closets.

It’s amazing how many items you will find in a kid’s closet. It’s as if in a blink of an eye, 1 turns into 1 million clutter, untouched items that either become stackable space-holders, germ-infested toys or clothes they outgrew years and years ago.

I can’t stress the importance of maximizing your space enough. Your closet is something you might always try to hide or not want to address. But, it’s important to keep your closet organized as much as you do your thoughts.

Plus, it will allow you to get rid of the old and bring in the new AND to give to those less fortunate! No more negative connotations associated with closets. In the end you will feel free, less likely to make your closet a hidden space and you will feel less anxious.

So how do you feel now? Feeling like your kids closet is out of control? Follow these tips on how to sort through those items, when it’s time to say farewell and when it’s time to reorganize.
