Spring Cleaning…With a Little Flair

Filed under: Cleaning,How To,Stress Free Living — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 1:05 pm

Spring cleaning is a given around this time a year (see our previous post on spring cleaning). It’s a time to clear out the cobwebs, chase away the dust bunnies, and let the fresh air blow through your home. But spring is also a great time to think about temporary ways to brighten up your spaces for the season. Moxie Girl suggests the following tips for putting some spring in your step and in your home!

Smells Spring Fresh

Our sense of smell is a powerful thing. Put away your wintry pine, cinnamon, and apple scents and transition to spring with lighter and cleaner smells. Add some small, fragrant herb pots in your kitchen or try a citrus candle. Tuck a lavender sachet in your linen closet to freshen your sheets and towels.

Seasonal Swaps

A few quick and easy changes can make a big difference in your décor. Trade your darker couch pillows for a fun floral pattern. Swap out heavy rugs with bright and functional outdoor ones. Exchange your flannel sheets and thick comforters for sunny new bedding. We often associate wreaths with fall and winter, but a colorful spring wreath on your door sets a happy tone. Other small switches that won’t break the bank include cheerful kitchen towels, a pretty plant in a bright flowerpot, or a new welcome mat.

Let the Light Shine In

If window washing wasn’t a part of your spring-cleaning list, make it one now; natural sunlight beaming through clean windows just says springtime. Pull back your heavy curtains, open your blinds, and give your screens a good scrub. You’ll feel “lighter” in no time! If you need some guidance in this arena let us know as we know great window cleaners to make you shine.

Wake Up Your Wardrobe

It’s hard to get in the spirit of the season when your closet is crammed with cold-weather clothes. Pull out your sundresses, shorts, and sandals and pack away the coats and boots. Stash your burgundies, blacks, and greys and make a bold spring statement with bright colors and crisp whites.

Soak in the Sun

Depending on where you live, the window between the blustery winter and the blazing hot summer may not be a long one, so enjoy it while it lasts. Make your outdoor space inviting and comfortable; you may only need a nice chair, some great reading material, and a tall glass of lemonade. Or fire up the grill and resolve to dine al fresco more often. Durable melamine dishes come in tons of pretty patterns and are perfect for the patio.

Happy spring from Moxie Girl! Please contact us if we can help you with your seasonal cleaning and organizing.

Hardwood Floors Should Not Be So Hard to Take Care of

Hardwood Floors Should Not Be So Hard to Take Care of

Remember the hard wood flooring you wanted so bad? And you finally got it? It was expensive right?

So why not take care of it so it can last forever and ever.

Microfiber floor dusters are your best friend when it comes to hard wood floor. The microfiber collects dust like a magnet instead of using it’s cousin, the broom, which can scratch your beautiful floor.

DO NOT USE:

Oil-Based, ammonia or abrasive cleaners

Wax or polish

Wet mops with any liquid cleaning products (could cause floor to warp, swell or cause joint-line separation).

Use a damp cloth to blot spills as soon as they happen. For tougher spots, like oil, paint, markers, lipstick, or ink, use nail polish remover/acetone. Dampen a clean, white cloth with the nail polish remover and dab the spot and then wipe down with a moist cloth. It is always best to avoid letting liquids stand on the floor.

Keep pads under furniture to prevent scratches if furniture is accidentally moved.

And also clip your doggy, kitty or pet dragons nails trimmed short enough to not scratch the floor.

Moxie Girl uses and recommends Bona Hardwood Floor cleaner.

If all else fails, call a professional floor cleaner to sand and refinish the floor.

Then you can repeat the steps from the top again.  ;-)

Quick Dish Washing Tips

Here are a few quick dish washing tips to hopefully make your time in the kitchen go a little more smoothly.

First off, the longer you wait to wash the dishes the more impossible it will seem to wash them all. It’s like they multiply or something. :-)

dish washing tips

:foundinmailbox:tumblr

Our dish washing tips that I have learned over the years and works especially nice if you are responsible for everyone’s dishes in the house is to fill the sink with water and soap as you are cooking. Once you’re done using a plate, cup, fork, spoon, knife, or whatever, just wash it! Make it a part of your routine and eventually you will get used to it. Just drop the used utensils in the soapy water when you are done with them. They will be waiting for you once you are done preparing your meal or when you are done eating.

This tip also helps your spatulas degrease as you are enjoying your meal. And if you use a dishwasher you will skip the step of having to rinse everything off before loading and running your dishwasher cycle.

Another of our dish washing tips to have in your repertoire are good quality utensils and soap. Now most of us these days use the dishwasher. If you have one a good detergent goes a long way. We use a lot of Melaleuca® brand products in our home and our clients homes as their stuff is organic and concentrated. Melaleuca® dish washing detergent soap is by far the best one we have used. It is a little more expensive but you don’t have to use very much per load of dishes and our dishes always come out great. Another tool is a good quality brush and scraper. We have yet to be disappointed with Pampered Chef® tools. This kitchen brush is no different.

Hopefully some of these dish washing tips will help you the next time you need to spend a lot of time in the kitchen cleaning up. Have yourself a glass of wine and/or a piece of chocolate. You earned it.

Keep An Organized Laundry House To Avoid Headache

Filed under: Laundry,Stress Free Living — Tags: , , , , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 6:30 am

It is a task we do every day, weekly, biweekly, and for those daring enough…monthly. But the longer we wait, the more our laundry piles up and the more an organized laundry space let alone an entire home seems like a dream. After awhile you end up spending more time preparing to load the washing machine then the time it takes for the first load to complete.

organized laundry - happy mother

photcredto: The Vintage Housewife

It’s like a scavenger hunt, excavating through piles of mess in the kids rooms, bathrooms, and closets. Dirty clothes everywhere, but you will not stop until you find the last dirty mismatch sock.  And even then you are not done. You still have to do the dangerous mission of transferring non-dripping wet fabrics to the dryer, all this while preparing lunch for the fam bam.

We are such control freaks that we want to do everything ourselves but sometimes feel overwhelmed. Letting the kids and hubby help keep the organized laundry a reality is a simple task that you can cross of your to do list without worrying about the house catching fire. Making organized laundry piles for everyone to take back to their space saves you a lot of pain and suffering later. Plus each family member will no exactly where they put their favorite shirt. No blame for you and you didn’t have to do the work. Everyone wins. SCORE!

Another organized laundry tip if you have the space is to designate baskets to each family member and put the folded laundry in there ready for their owners to pick up. Give everyone a different color basket or laundry bin, add little plaques or something, and make it as fun and exciting as you possibly can make laundry day be. You will be skip to my looing all the way back to the couch. :-)

Ahhhh, isn’t home work so easy when others chip in to help?

Game Night- BEWARE of Laughter!

Filed under: Hiring Home Services,Home Organizing,How To,Stress Free Living — Miss Moxie @ 9:03 am

So I was just visiting some of my girlfriends for our usual relaxing “Girls Night In.” These ladies can get pretty creative when it comes to planning a night of fun and relaxation! We have kept this tradition lasting through our hectic, busy lives as we all deserve to relax with our friends for a night!

This week for “Girls Night In,” Ali brought out a game that I had never played before. Apples to Apples is the name of the game! This funny word game had us laughing all night long! After an hour of playing Apples to Apples, of course I decided I need to have this game for my house!

I finally picked up the box to read more about the game, and come to find out it is approved for children ages 12 and up. Even your kids can play this game with you! Have a family that you need bonding time with? Board or card games are a great way to accomplish that!

Having trouble with too many games/toys cluttering your home? Moxie Girl offers home organizing packages to all clients. And we organize game/toy rooms!

Allergy Attack? Attack them Back!

Well the temperature changes thee past few weeks have been hard on my body! It seems I have come down with a bad cold. Has anyone in your family come down with a cold? Or are allergies acting up in your family? Congestion, cough, sore throat, headaches… Lucky me I know my best tool in this situation! And so do many of our clients! A HUMIDIFIER!

I must say I don’t know anyone who likes to be sick. So what should we do to heal quickly at the first sign of a cold or allergy attack? Our Moxie Team has been noticing many of our in-home services clients have been bringing out their humidifiers to protect them and their families from getting colds, irritation allergies, and asthma attacks. To protect your kids, family, and selves from getting sicker, join our clients in putting a humidifier in your bedroom while sleeping. The humidifier will decrease the amount of dry air in your room. Having dry air in your home worsens symptoms of colds, allergies, and asthma.

Here are some fun kids designs from Target that we have seen in our client’s homes!

You can find different designs at home and health retail stores. Target has other children’s designs to choose from also!

Not a kid anymore? Ok grown ups, there are designs for your room too!

These designs can be found at Target too!

Keep your air moist everyone!

Fun with Bed Decorating

One of the best things to do when you come back from the vacation is spend some intimate, quality-time with your bed. In another post we will look into the different types of beds and deceptions to watch for, but in this one I feel like talking about bed decorating.

That’s right. We are no longer “making the bed”, we are bed decorating. Once our time of slumber is done and the day is going full swing, you will most likely want to do some bed decorating IF you like what you are decorating it with!

bed decorating

Notice how there is not much to the bed at all and still it looks so great!

Dingy pillows, old sheets, a torn comforter and a few-decades-old baby blanket sluffed on your bed, as if a tornado ran through, might even keep you from getting into your bed let alone convince you to do some bed decorating on it.

Now I’m not saying bed decorating means that you need to go and buy everything sheer and silk. I’m just saying to have some sort of method to your madness.

bed decorating ideas

Simple is chic! Not to mention, it’s cheap!

If you are tight on budget, go to Goodwill, buy some pillows for a couple bucks, grab fabric and sew the “designer” pillow together. Being eclectic actually makes you look more trendy and the items more valuable.

inexpensive bed decorating

This look makes it feel expensive, but can you guess how much it really was?

And I truly believe that if you wake up and start your day by making your bed or better your doing some minor bed decorating, you:

  1. have to get up instead of hitting snooze to miss out on the day
  2. you feel more satisfied with what you have and proud that you have it
  3. are more confident when those “random” stop-by’s occur (we all know the kind)
clean and simple bed decorating

See similarities in these bed decorations? Simplicity!

I’ve always been told that the best of luck comes to the most prepared and I believe it. Organize your getaway. Organize your transition back to chaos. Organize your bed. And organize your life!

The more simple, the better! Show me your bed decorations! Enjoy the few I’ve put in here!

Things You didn’t know you needed!

Don't feel lost. We are generating a list so you can fulfill the phrase, "the best of luck comes to the most prepared".

One my friends was telling me about how her son keeps calling of items they forgot to bring when they moved him into the dorms. And I got to thinking about my glory days when I first left the nest and all of things I didn’t even realize I needed.

It was my first apartment and boy was I in for an adventure. It might have been one of the worst years of my life, but looking back on it now, I’m glad I endured it because of the lessons I learned.

If you are moving into a new place or know of anyone moving for the first time, here’s a simple list of items that you should purchase.

What people don’t know they need:

-Flour- in case you ever want to make or bake food

-Sugar- always necessary

-Salt

-Seasonings

-Clips for your hangers

-Ironing board (sounds silly, but it’s commonly forgotten)

-Vacuum cleaner

-CLEANING SUPPLIES- all kinds. Even bug spray

-Alarm clocks

-Hamper

-Extra sheets

-Wash cloths

-Cookies Sheets (for both cookies and pizza)

-And the list goes on and on

Have any other items you think should be added to the list? Comment below.

Which Messy Closet Will Win?

Filed under: How To,Stress Free Living — Tags: , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 11:17 pm

So, the pictures have started to come in. We will be posting pictures of the Messy Closet entries on our blog, as well as on our Facebook page. While the voting is going to be purely subjective (hey, at least we are honest!), pity comments from your friends and family wouldn’t hurt. We will continue to post more as they come in, but in the mean time, try and guess which one will win a closet organizing package from Moxie Girl!

We are taking submissions until June 30th, so visit the Official Rules page to learn how you can win! Without further delay, here they are:

Closet #1:

Messy Closet #1: This closet is the closet that tucks around under our stairs.  I have an assortment of items ranging from Christmas (& other holidays like Easter) decor, electronics, stationary items (scrapbooking stuff & wrapping paper/bags), vacuums, steam cleaner, painting  upplies, & shoes, etc…  I tried to have it somewhat organized but w/ a 2 yr old that won’t nap a lot of my projects (like this) have been unfortunately pushed to the back burner. It is hard to do detailed work w/ a little “helper”.  ;)

Closet #2

Messy Closet #2: You know those boxes your parents send you when they think you are grown up enough to take all your childhood stuff? This is where they ended up in our house. While it is nice that they are all contained to a small space, it would be even nicer to have the closet available for other stuff!

Closet #3

Messy Closet #3: I have no time to organize, put away, seperate, or even find time to have the light fixed so I can see my chaos-i have found time to prioritize for others just not me. Please pick me for some Moxie Magic:)

Messy Closet #4

Messy Closet #4: I share my closet with my daughter and husband and Christmas. It is a disaster!
