How to Organize a Closet for Kids

Filed under: Home Organizing,How To — Tags: , , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 5:55 pm

Recently, I had the opportunity to help a client with a few organizing projects around her house. The first place that she needed guidance with was how to organize a closet, more specifically her kid’s closets. Her little ones are 5 and 2, so there were lots of clothes that had been outgrown, as well as lots of clothes to grow into. This is something we see quite often in kid closets, especially when the families have a great group of friends who all pass hand-me-downs around. It saves tons of money on clothes and shoes, but it can become a storage nightmare if it isn’t set up in an organized way. That’s what was happening with these closets.

With just a few modifications, and a little bit of time, we were able to create some better systems for storage and much tidier closets! Here’s what we did in her son, Logan’s super-hero themed closet:

The closet shelf was a catch-all for clothes, memories, and more.

After a lot of sorting of clothes, we were able to get everything that was Logan’s current size hung up. Anything that was too big was put into a Too BIG box. (This box has a lid so things don’t get dusty while waiting to be grown in to)

Then, bins were created to go on the shelf to hold extra bedding and Too Small clothes. These are open top bins so clothes can easily be tossed in when Mom discovers they don’t fit anymore, or the bedding can be pulled out easily.

Mom can easily toss clothes that are outgrown into this bin until the are handed down to another family.

All-in-all, the closet turned out great. Even Logan loved the new look.

Keep watching for more projects like this!

Quick Dish Washing Tips

Here are a few quick dish washing tips to hopefully make your time in the kitchen go a little more smoothly.

First off, the longer you wait to wash the dishes the more impossible it will seem to wash them all. It’s like they multiply or something. :-)

dish washing tips

:foundinmailbox:tumblr

Our dish washing tips that I have learned over the years and works especially nice if you are responsible for everyone’s dishes in the house is to fill the sink with water and soap as you are cooking. Once you’re done using a plate, cup, fork, spoon, knife, or whatever, just wash it! Make it a part of your routine and eventually you will get used to it. Just drop the used utensils in the soapy water when you are done with them. They will be waiting for you once you are done preparing your meal or when you are done eating.

This tip also helps your spatulas degrease as you are enjoying your meal. And if you use a dishwasher you will skip the step of having to rinse everything off before loading and running your dishwasher cycle.

Another of our dish washing tips to have in your repertoire are good quality utensils and soap. Now most of us these days use the dishwasher. If you have one a good detergent goes a long way. We use a lot of Melaleuca® brand products in our home and our clients homes as their stuff is organic and concentrated. Melaleuca® dish washing detergent soap is by far the best one we have used. It is a little more expensive but you don’t have to use very much per load of dishes and our dishes always come out great. Another tool is a good quality brush and scraper. We have yet to be disappointed with Pampered Chef® tools. This kitchen brush is no different.

Hopefully some of these dish washing tips will help you the next time you need to spend a lot of time in the kitchen cleaning up. Have yourself a glass of wine and/or a piece of chocolate. You earned it.

Keep An Organized Laundry House To Avoid Headache

Filed under: Laundry,Stress Free Living — Tags: , , , , , , — OMG - The Original Moxie Girl @ 6:30 am

It is a task we do every day, weekly, biweekly, and for those daring enough…monthly. But the longer we wait, the more our laundry piles up and the more an organized laundry space let alone an entire home seems like a dream. After awhile you end up spending more time preparing to load the washing machine then the time it takes for the first load to complete.

It’s like a scavenger hunt, excavating through piles of mess in the kids rooms, bathrooms, and closets. Dirty clothes everywhere, but you will not stop until you find the last dirty mismatch sock.  And even then you are not done. You still have to do the dangerous mission of transferring non-dripping wet fabrics to the dryer, all this while preparing lunch for the fam bam.

We are such control freaks that we want to do everything ourselves but sometimes feel overwhelmed. Letting the kids and hubby help keep the organized laundry a reality is a simple task that you can cross of your to do list without worrying about the house catching fire. Making organized laundry piles for everyone to take back to their space saves you a lot of pain and suffering later. Plus each family member will no exactly where they put their favorite shirt. No blame for you and you didn’t have to do the work. Everyone wins. SCORE!

Another organized laundry tip if you have the space is to designate baskets to each family member and put the folded laundry in there ready for their owners to pick up. Give everyone a different color basket or laundry bin, add little plaques or something, and make it as fun and exciting as you possibly can make laundry day be. You will be skip to my looing all the way back to the couch. :-)

Ahhhh, isn’t home work so easy when others chip in to help?

Lions, Tigers and Closets? Oh My!

Want your kid's closet to look like this? Follow our simple steps and it can!

Closets, closets, closets! Now that I went through my closet for my ultimate shopping spree last night, I thought it might be a good idea to address some tips on how to organize kid’s closets.

It’s amazing how many items you will find in a kid’s closet. It’s as if in a blink of an eye, 1 turns into 1 million clutter, untouched items that either become stackable space-holders, germ-infested toys or clothes they outgrew years and years ago.

I can’t stress the importance of maximizing your space enough. Your closet is something you might always try to hide or not want to address. But, it’s important to keep your closet organized as much as you do your thoughts.

Plus, it will allow you to get rid of the old and bring in the new AND to give to those less fortunate! No more negative connotations associated with closets. In the end you will feel free, less likely to make your closet a hidden space and you will feel less anxious.

So how do you feel now? Feeling like your kids closet is out of control? Follow these tips on how to sort through those items, when it’s time to say farewell and when it’s time to reorganize.

1, 2, 3 Break!

It was such a beautiful weekend that I decided to invite the whole family over for a pool day to splash around, play a few games and soak up some sun.

I went over to the equipment bin to grab a volleyball to toss around with the kids, but as I opened the lid, it was as if a cloud of green stench rose from a deep pit of doom. The volleyball was flat, the football looked like it had been trampled on by a herd of elephants and all of the other sports gear reeked!

Something needed to be done- and fast! And as if a light bulb went off in my head, I thought it would be a better idea to bring the sport equipment inside and out of the Arizona heat.

In honor of Spring cleaning, I’m sorting through ALL the sporting gear in my home to find a way to organize it- even if that means tossing it out. I stumbled upon these three ways of organizing in Real Simple magazine from David Price.

1. Ultilize your closets!
-Maximize space by using a hanging shoe rack for gloves, hats, balls, etc.

2. Rubbermaid Sports Organizers!
-Coat racks, clear Rubbermaid bins, or this neat stacker makes finding equipment easy.

3. Garage Works Too!
-If you have an area to mount a pegboard to nail items up, go for it! Otherwise, set up a storage unit with color-coded bags full of gear for the family to grab-n-go!

Please let me know if you have tried any of these or which ones you think will work the best. I’m thinking the Rubbermaid Sports Organizers might win in my home! Thanks for some great ideas David!
