Housecleaning is a task that usually falls on the TO-DO list somewhere below “Wash the Dog”, and somewhere above “Write a letter to the IRS”! Dusting, vacuuming, polishing and cleaning hidden areas can be tedious and time-consuming, so we tend to do ‘what MUST be done’, and push off the non-essentials for another day. So, unless you are a cleaning pro, there are 3 places in your home that you are probably forgetting to clean.
1 – AIR FILTERS AND EXHAUST FANS
Out of sight, out of mind, right? If you occasionally remember the air filter, but don’t have a new one to change them out, just give it a quick vacuum and make a note to buy one soon. Don’t forget a quick wipe with a damp rag on the vent. A bathroom exhaust fan works in a humid atmosphere so it will get badly soiled over time. This task is a little more complicated and requires unscrewing screws and unplugged an electrical device, so unless you are comfortable doing this, it might be a good job for your handyman. If your up to it, you can GOOGLE search, ‘cleaning a bathroom exhaust fan’ to find directions, or head over to see Jillee at One Good Thing where she has some great insturctions on this, and many other odd cleaning jobs.
2 – REFRIGERATOR COILS and WATER FILTERS
When cleaning hidden areas, don’t forget that your refrigerator has an air coil that is circulating air constantly. It’s usually found on the floor on the back or the front of the unit. Mine is on the front, and you just pop the plastic grill off to get to the coils. To keep your household electric bill down, it’s a good idea to vacuum the coils and wipe down with a rag monthly. Your Water-in-the-Door Refrigerators have a filter which must be changed regularly to keep the water quality high. There will be a number to call in your refrigerator manual to order filters.
3 – UNDER AND BEHIND EVERYTHING IN YOUR HOUSE
The hidded cobwebs, dust and dirt – not to mention that elusive sock, your missing favorite pen and little Annie’s lucky rock, are probably all hiding under or behind something in your house! 90 percent of the dust in your home is lurking under the bed, the couch and the appliances, thus the need for cleaning hidden areas! Pull them out every-other-month and vacuum well, being sure to use the crevice tool along the baseboards.
A great way to remember to clean these areas is by scheduling them in on your calender, or the reminder on your phone.
