Moxie Girl Salutes George Washington Carver
This month, the team at Moxie Girl would like to take a moment to honor one of the greatest U.S. Inventors in history: George Washington Carver.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery during the 1860’s. Due to the Civil War ending when he was boy, he had the opportunity to pursue an education in botany. Since childhood, Mr. Carver had always been fond of experimenting with plants and agriculture. With education, his interest grew into a teaching career that helped heal the crops in the southern United States by introducing farmers to his concept of crop rotation.
Peanuts and Cotton
What do peanuts and cotton have in common? They were the two crops largely used in the south. The peanuts were used to fix the soil that had become depleted by the cotton crops. You might be asking yourself, “wow, was that how peanut butter was invented?”. Well, while Mr. Carver created many things with the peanut crops; he did not create peanut butter. So, what were the peanuts used for? They were used to make about 300 products, including but not limited to: mayonnaise, laxatives, laundry soap (for which we are eternally grateful) and glue!

George Washington Carver is a great model for us here at Moxie Girl. We strive to have a positive impact in our community and on our environment, doing our best to be eco-minded, use local (and natural) cleaning products and give back to our community.
