The BEST Non-Toxic Ways to Make Your Home Smell AMAZING!

June 24th, 2016 | By Mary Ellen

If you have ever walked into your front door after a day away and were almost knocked out by “THAT SMELL”, then this is the read for you! I love a fresh, non-toxic fragrance in the home, so I really dislike using toxic room sprays! Additionally, I don’t want to use unsafe chemicals to kill odors! After some research, experimenting, blending and mixing – I can help you LOSE that SMELL! Whether it’s ‘BOY ATHLETE’ scent, ‘WET DOG’ odor, or ‘GHASTLY FRIDGE’ fumes, here are a few heavenly recipes to get to the source of the bad odors, and turn your home into a ‘Sweet Smelling Dwelling’!

Start with the Basics to Create a Non-Toxic Fragrance

First of all, my go-to ingredient base is usually Baking Soda. You can by the giant-sized bag at Costco for a great price. The other ‘secret ingredient’ is a great Essential Oil! I have a stash of my favorite scents for different purposes. You can get Essential Oils at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Sprouts, or from a direct selling company.

  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
  • 1-3 drops citrus, lavender or peppermint Essential Oil ( or any scent your prefer)
  • Distilled Water
  • 8 oz. Spray Bottle

Thoroughly mix oil and baking soda in a dish. Funnel it into an 8 oz. spray bottle. add distilled water to fill and shake thoroughly. Use this spray to spritz your fabric furniture or as a room freshener with a non-toxic fragrance. Use on cloth laundry hampers and laundry room rugs.

  • A Cup of Baking Soda
  • 1 Tablespoon Borax Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon finely ground cinnamon

Mix ingredients well. Put mixture in a shaker container and shake liberally over carpeting. Let stand an hour. Vacuum. Your house will smell fabulous, your carpet will be safely deoderized (and the borax even helps it come a little cleaner!) and you’ll have peace of mind knowing that if your kids or pets lie on the carpet, they will be free from toxic chemical residue!

Creative Ways to Make Your Rooms Smell Divine!

  • Bamboo skewers
  • Small glass jars
  • Natural All-Purpose Cleaner ( MOXIE Girl recommends TRUCE All natural products. TRUCE All Purpose Cleaner has a lovely peppermint smell.)

Fill jar half-full with cleaner. Add 8 skewers, trimmed shorter if necessary. Place your non-toxic fragrance diffuser on shelves around the house for a fresh home year-round.

  • Used fabric softener dryer sheets
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil

Sprinkle 2-3 drops of oil onto the dryer sheet and hide anywhere! Under the seat in your car, in stinky shoes, in drawers as a sachet, in the toilet paper tube, in the linen cupboard – these are easy and recycle something you were going to throw away! Non-toxic AND they smell delightful – WIN/WIN!

I hope Miss MOXIE’s simple, non-toxic fragrance tips have helped you turn your home from an ‘odorous abode’ into a ‘sweet retreat’!
